【Part 2】The Mysterious 26 Cents

Last time, I shared a story about trying one of Tufti’s practices: “Go somewhere you normally don’t go.” So I chose to visit a pharmacy I don’t usually visit.

Several days had passed since I discovered what Tufti calls the “center of awareness”—a third layer, neither internal nor external—and began acting from that state. During that time, I could feel something inside me had shifted.

Then, as I walked into the pharmacy, wondering, “Has anything really changed?”—I noticed it immediately.

The staff and even the customers were unusually warm and kind. Of course, this pharmacy had always had that New Yorker-style straightforward kindness, but this day felt different.

It was as if everyone sensed I was in some kind of special state, and responded to me with a quiet warmth and respect. I was a little surprised and found myself asking, “Wait, is this really happening…?”

Then, a few days later, something even more striking happened—almost as if to reinforce the experience.

One afternoon, I went to return bottles for recycling (in the U.S., this gives you a small refund). I started inserting the bottles into the machine, and it stopped exactly at 25 cents. The other machines were full and unavailable.

So I went to the counter and received a 25-cent coin as a refund.

Then I noticed a 1-cent coin on the ground, picked it up, and naturally felt like placing both coins—26 cents total—into a donation cup near the register. It was a small gesture, but it felt right in the moment.

As I walked to the exit and reached the door, I looked down—and there they were: a 25-cent coin and a 1-cent coin, lying on the floor.

“…What?”

The exact same amount, appearing so precisely in that moment—I froze.“Is this… the same 26 cents I just gave away, coming back to me?”My logical mind couldn’t grasp it, but a calm certainty settled in my heart: this was a sign from reality.

To be honest, my first thought was: “Something weird just happened.”But in truth, these “weird things” have happened repeatedly throughout my life.Still, this 26-cent incident left a lasting impression.

According to Tufti, reality is a screen, and we choose which “script” we live by through awareness and intention.

Perhaps this 26 cents was a confirmation that I had selected a new script. And the fact that it came to me in such a playful way—it felt like the Universe’s sense of humor.

That said, honestly…Experiences like this aren't even that rare in my life.Just a few weeks earlier the encounter, I somehow knew who I would run into and where—and it actually happened.

So maybe this 26-cent moment wasn’t a “miracle” per se, but simply part of the flow I’m already in.

What would you make of this moment?

And by the way… the number “26” itself—do you think it holds any special meaning?

It does, actually. But that’s a story for another day.
